Gov. Chris Christie remains a very important part of the New Jersey business and political scene. - (OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR)
The State Chamber of Commerces annual Walk to Washington put hundreds of the states top movers and shakers from the business and political world on the same five-hour train ride to Washington, D.C., Thursday afternoon.
NJBIZ took the opportunity to poll a random sampling of 40 or so riders to get their feelings on issues related to Gov. Chris Christie, who will speak at the annual dinner later Thursday.
Here are the results:
NJBIZ put the governor in the No. 2 spot on its annual Power 100 list. Do you agree the governor is no longer the most powerful player in the state?
Yes: 72 percent
No: 28 percent
Do you think the governor will complete his term?
Yes: 77 percent
No: 23 percent
Do you think the governors next job, whether it comes this year or next, will be in President Donald Trumps administration?
No: 51 percent
Yes: 49 percent
Rank the last five governors that were elected in a general election (Christie, Jon Corzine, Jim McGreevey, Christie Whitman and Jim Florio) from best to worst on a 5-1 scale.
Whitman: 3.94 average
Christie: 3.56 average
Florio: 3.25 average
McGreevey: 2.56 average
Corzine: 1.94 average
When asked to name the crowning achievement of the Christie administration, there were many answers (including plenty who said, None.) Of those who answered, his willingness to take on the teachers union and his willingness to slow the growth of spending topped the list.
Many said something along these lines: Christie 1.0 was great. Unfortunately, we never got anything in his second term except a failed bid for the presidency.
